The Law Society Brings Together Legal Professionals in Türkiye to Discuss UK–Türkiye FTA Modernisation

The Law Society of England and Wales convened a focused roundtable in Türkiye, bringing together dual-qualified lawyers and professionals progressing toward UK solicitor qualification. The discussion centred on the upcoming modernisation of the UK–Türkiye Free Trade Agreement (FTA), with a particular emphasis on the integration of legal services into the revised framework.

A standout topic of the negotiation agenda is the inclusion of legal services—a forward-looking initiative poised to open new pathways for cross-border legal cooperation, foster healthy competition, and raise the overall standard of legal services in both jurisdictions.

Importantly, this development also presents a valuable opportunity for Türkiye to benefit from UK legal expertise within a more structured and liberalised framework. English law continues to be one of the most commonly chosen foreign legal systems in contracts involving Turkish parties—especially in international commercial and investment arbitration—underscoring the relevance of this initiative.
